Dear future readers,
At the beginning of the semester, I thought I had a pretty good grasp on how to be an effective writer. I learned a lot of new skills as a writer in my first year writing class. However, this year I honed the skills I learned from the first semester and became a much better writer.
Coming into college writing, I was pretty much stuck on the basic layout for an essay, and most of the ones I did write were pretty bland and non creative. However, I enjoyed writing more in this class than most of my other writing classes I've had before. The work seemed to be a little less challenging because most of the issues I wrote about were real world problems that I had genuine interest in. I feel this reflected in the quality of my work as well.
Before I came into college writing class, It was nearly impossible to write more than a two whole pages. Now, two pages seems like It's never enough. My informative and surprising paper was easily six pages and could have honestly been way more. This reflects back to the creative freedom this class gives you, by giving you the ability to choose what you write about instead of being given a bland prompt that is so uncontroversial and bland that just looking at it made you actually hate the tree for being made into the paper it was written on. The creative freedom was what I liked most. It made the class seem more likable, and less like a general Ed class you're forced to take.
The biggest thing I learned though was the power of revision. I'll be honest, I absolutely hate writing and the fact that we had to revise made it even worse. However, even though the work was long and thought consuming, It always seemed like there was a greater feeling of satisfaction turning in a paper because of how much time was put into it. It seemed like gravity got a little lighter after finishing the paper and turning it in.
Even though this was a general Ed class, it felt like something more than just a waste of time. I actually learned some valuable skills because of this class. I really never knew the weight of "real people in real world" until writing this. It really makes more sense to me now than it did before because I can think now of how I can use that in the future, both writing and real life. If you think this is just a garbage class, just wait a little bit and try to understand Dr. Kyburz's advice about writing, you might actually learn something.
